What is a Young Carer?
A young carer is a child or young person under the age of 18 who takes care of someone else and takes on responsibilities that are usually expected from an adult. These responsibilities can include:
- Housework e.g cooking, cleaning, shopping
- Looking after siblings
- Giving medication
- Emotional support
A young carer regularly cares for a parent, grandparent, sibling or relative who struggles with:
- A disability
- A long term illness
- Mental health
- Misuse of substances

Support can look different for each young carer and every council has a duty to advise, inform and provide resources.
